Hart E. Posen, University of Michigan: Workshop on Contributing to the Strategy Literature
In this three day workshop, we will focus on identifying and framing contributions to the literatures in strategy and organization theory. In the morning sessions, we will read and discuss published papers that highlight ways of contributing to the literature. While some of these papers are big blockbusters, others are less well--‐known. Nonetheless, each paper finds some way to make a clear and important contribution to the literature. In reading these papers, focus on answering the question: Why was the paper published?
In the afternoon sessions, we will focus on your own working papers. Each student is required to submit a working paper that will be the focus of his/her attention during the workshop. The objective in this element of the workshop is twofold. First, I hope that a discussion focusing on the contribution of your paper will enable you to improve the paper and the likelihood of publication. Second, in my experience, one of the best ways in which to come to understand how to craft a paper that makes a contribution, is to help others do so.
The class will be limited to 10 students (because of its workshop format). Each student participating in the workshop must have a working paper that they are willing to present. I will request a copy in the days leading up to the workshop.
Grading will consist of two elements. Class contribution will account for half of your grade – I will evaluate both the amount, but most importantly, the quality of your contribution to the discussion. The other half of the grade will be based on your workshop paper. That is, you will submit this paper to me prior to the first session, and a revised version at the end of the workshop. I will evaluate both the absolute quality of your paper, and the progress of your paper over the course of the workshop.
Please contact Dirk Martignoni for further information and for application to the seminar.
